I've been stitching for 27 years. I bought my first project when my mother was ill. I needed something to do while I sat with her. Needlepoint was a calming distraction. I find the rhythm of the needle moving in and out and the rasp of the yarn against the canvas remarkably soothing.
Once I was addicted (there can be a twitchy jumpiness in being without a project) I began to design my own canvases. I found many designs to be too traditional, too centered, too formal, too twee. Why not make the pattern bigger? Why not make the colors fresher? Why not begin to look at this ancient art a new way?
Everyone can create with needlepoint. Don't fret about how long it takes to finish. Enjoy the process.
